Cambridge University Research posts: SUSTAINABLE CITY-REGIONS

Senior Research Associate, Research Associate and Research Assistant posts
Salary range £22,332 to £44,074
The University of Cambridge is leading a consortium of six universities funded by EPSRC to research how different patterns of spatial development of city-regions can affect sustainability. This £3.8m four year project will take a holistic multidisciplinary approach that includes buildings, energy, transport, water, waste and health. There will be case studies of the Greater South East and North East regions of the UK. We also expect to collaborate with similar regional studies of Beijing, Los Angeles, and Sao Paulo. The aim is to understand how urban density, settlement size and spatial form may affect the potential for infrastructure technologies to improve sustainability. Further information about the ReVISIONS project can be found at www.regionalvisions.ac.uk Applications are invited for the following research positions:
Senior Research Associate, 3 years fixed term, to develop an integrated framework for testing possible future patterns of regional spatial development. This will include developing a behavioural land use and transport model and integrating this with models of energy generation and supply, urban form, water and waste management developed by the project partners. The successful applicant is likely to have experience of computer modelling and a background in economics, engineering, environmental science, geography, mathematics, or transport planning.
Research Associate, 3 years fixed term, to develop a systems approach to integrate the expertise and design tools of the university partners across the energy, health, transport, urban design, water, and waste sectors. The researcher will then use this systems tool to design integrated multi-sector options. This role requires an understanding of planning and sustainability issues, the communication skills to proactively interact with partner organisations, and good report writing skills. The successful applicant is likely to have a background in architecture, engineering, environmental science, geography, transport or planning.
Research Associate or Research Assistant, 2 years fixed term, for an adaptable researcher with the analytical skills to assist with testing the integrated options with the integrated modelling framework, to acquire and assemble data, prepare inputs, operate computer models, analyse outputs and assist with preparing research reports.
Applicants should have proven academic ability and an interest in researching the sustainability of the built environment within a quantitative framework. Senior Research Associate posts require some postdoctoral research or equivalent experience. Research Associate posts are normally postdoctoral or with equivalent professional experience. Research Assistant posts require a degree in a relevant subject, preferably a Masters degree. These posts may also be available on a part time pro-rata basis.
Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Tony Hargreaves, email ajh91@cam.ac.uk, tel. 01223 760128
To apply please send a covering letter describing how you match the requirements of the post, your CV and a completed PD18 application form (Parts 1 & 3 only) obtainable from http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/forms/pd18/ to Professor Marcial Echenique, Department of Architecture, 1-5 Scroope Terrace, Cambridge, CB2 1PX, or by email to ajh91@cam.ac.uk
