The Eye House project
http://www.eye-house.org

Inspiration
This work is in continuity with my Transversal period, when I was simply working with specific sites such as ports, a photographer and my own body, without any added architecture but the architecture of the site itself. Inverted pyramids and trapezial volumes can be seen in ports, but in this project the overall volume has a more abstract presence.

I started to experiment with representation of lateral gravity for my architect diploma, using oblique surfaces in real sites and video. When you are inside the Eye House, the gravity is visually impeded, thanks to the upward movement and the windows geometry imposing its own dynamic to the space.

If you visit my studio in Shoreditch you notice a big white lacquered trapezial volume, it would take some time to explain the different steps to design the Eye House, but you could see that it's completely connected.

Eye House concept
Initially conceived for a very small square land, the Eye House intends to create a sense of spaciousness and expansion, using the diagonal and upward movement of its internal architecture, hiding every domestic functions under a folding floor, and using materials reflecting the light and sky.

While the space encapsulates and isolates from the weather, there is a visual communion with the urban environment outdoor and the sky. And from the outside, people can feel the presence; by night there are great light effects and perceived activity. This piece is very alive.

The ground floor can be used as a kiosk by artists and designers booking for a short period, and wishing to show and sell their work to a wide audience, and it doesn't consume the surface of the public space. It is placed strategically to slow down the flux of people, yet not stopping it.

From Contextual architecture to Transcontextual object
The Eye House is designed to uplift the public realm and interact with the passer-by, it is also open during some public events yet it is inhabited, emphasising the relationship between private use and public realm.

The Eye House, with its self-balanced form, can be replicated at a smaller scale, such as a table lamp, crossing the boundaries not only between public realm art and domestic architecture, but between site specific urban art and mass dissemination art form.

5 years ago Dimitris Papaioannou’s creative direction of the Athens 2004 Opening Ceremony was hailed a “triumph” by The Times of London. His latest work, Dyo (2006), enjoyed an unprecedented run in the Greek capital, with over 100,000 tickets sold !
This new production, Nowhere explores the physical space of the stage itself : a spatial mechanism in a state of constant change. The theatre has just been transformed, including a new cut… Continue

Civic Aesthetics Unleashed - Discussion at Siobhan Davies Studios - London Southwark

Flore Nové-Josserand has piloted a discussion titled "Civic Aesthetics Unleashed" between choreographer Susanne Thomas, art consultant Vivien Lovell, and visual artist Lothar Götz, about their experience of introducing art into public spaces.

I had to book by telephone, and I was agreeably surprised, it felt as if the receptionist was "part of the family". It was my first visit at Siobhan Davies Studios. The building grown out o… Continue

Hi Thierry,

I hope everything's great! I was wondering if you have any contacts in New York with interests between architecture and dance - I am starting graduate school at Columbia in the fall, and I have developed an interest in initiating some collaborative works/performance there. I would really love to learn more about your experiences between dance and architecture as well!

Hi Thierry,
Enjoyed looking through your work and writing. Alan Thompson recommended that I send you a note about a competition that we are holding, the Land Art Generator Initiative, with the sense that you may be interested in getting the word out about it. You can see more about the project at LAGI_2010Presentation.pdf and by going to landartgenerator.org. It's an international call for interdisciplinary teams to design large scale public art works that function as hyper aesthetic renewable energy power plants. Sites are in UAE for 2010. We're in London for the ISC now actually. Will be at late at tate on friday night too.

All the best,
Robert
