Report: Digital Cities Seminar - Presentation3: Justin Saunders

Justin demonstrated the integrated mapping system that he has been developing since 2000. The EmapSite portal offers an on-line interactive environment where one can build, organize and archive projects. Data sets can be up-loaded by the subscriber and overlaid onto raw map data. The available views include automatically scaled traditional map data and satelite photography. There are tools that allow accurate measurements to be made in plan and isometric projections. By way of illustration, Justin showed how a wind farm project had been integrated within his mapping environment. Mapping overlays could be accessed that showed exactly where the proposed wind turbines would be visible from. Individual trig points were included that linked to ground level views of the scheme. It made a perfect tool to asses the impact of these structures on the environment. There were also links to facilitate direct pubic consultation. There strengths of this system are its comparative accuracy as compared to other solutions. The database is also kept very current with any mapping developments immediately being incorporated into the master model; other more accessible solutions can be several years out of date.
