歌川広重

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was one of the greatest exponents of Ukiyo-e art (meaning "pictures of a floating world").

An exhibition just ended two weeks ago, hosted by the Fondazione Roma in collaboration with The Honolulu Academy of Arts, which possesses one of the largest collection of prints by Hiroshige, boasting over 3,000 images, mostly from the legacy of novelist James Michener.

American novelist James Michener (1907-1997) contributed more than $100 million to universities, museums, libraries, and other charitable causes. The James A. Michener Art Museum opened in 1988, houses collections of well-known and local artists. The Nakashima Reading Room was constructed in honor of his third wife's Japanese heritage.
